In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)
In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)
What is IVF?
IVF or In-vitro Fertilization, more commonly known as a test-tube baby, is a fertilization technique. In this technique, the eggs from the female and the sperms from the male form an embryo. The embryo is formed in a laboratory and then later transferred into the female body. In natural conception, this procedure generally occurs in the fallopian tube present in the human body.
This procedure involves several steps which include the following: stimulation of ovaries to produce oocytes, collection of the eggs from ovaries, fertilization of the eggs with the sperm in an IVF laboratory, Embryo culture and grading, transfer of the embryo, conducting a pregnancy test fourteen days after the embryo transfers.
After the first test-tube baby in 1978, there have been eighty lakh children born with this procedure. When is IVF indicated?
Bilateral Blocked Tubes:
- Bilateral Blocked tubes are when both the fallopian tubes are blocked. It prohibits the sperm from reaching the egg and thus, restricting fertilization. This issue is with patients with diseases like genital tuberculosis, moderate or severe Endometriosis, ovarian cystectomy, ectopic pregnancy, and many more. It is also called tubal factor infertility. The blockage acts as a mechanical barrier preventing fertilization. Hence, IVF comes in handy here as it bypasses the tubes.
Severe Male Factor:
- For conception to take place organically, around ten million sperm need to ejaculate. However, when the sperm count or the mobility of the sperms is low, the sperms cannot swim to the egg. Given that the sperm concentration is below average or abnormalities are in its shape and size, it won’t be easy for the sperm to fertilize it. Hence, this obstructs fertilization. If this occurs, contact a specialist to check if these are treatable problems, or any underlying health conditions affecting fertilization.
Endometriosis:
- The Endometriosis disorder affects almost ten percent of females in reproductive age. This disorder has affected Fertility in several ways. It causes impairment of the number of eggs, their quality, fertilization, the quality of the embryo, distortion of pelvic anatomy, uterine receptivity, and many more. This disorder occurs when the uterine tissue implants and starts growing outside the uterus. Hence, this affects the functions of the fallopian tubes, ovaries, and uterus.
Damaged or Absent Fallopian Tubes:
- It is a rare condition where the Fallopian Tubes are absent since birth. In other common cases, the tubes have blockages, tube damage like severe adhesions, infections, and many other matters.
Advanced age of the female partner:
- The female age plays a significant role in IVF as, after thirty-eight years, all the fertility treatments done on females have a meager success rate. IVF has more chances at success when done on ages lower to the one mentioned above.
Decreased ovarian reserve:
- The ovarian reserve declines with age, hence, result in a decreased ovarian reserve. Therefore, waiting too long in such cases might reduce the chances of the parents having a child.
Unexplained Fertility:
- If there have been more than three IUI failures resulting in unexplained Fertility, IVF can be a more economical option. Unexplained Fertility is when no particular cause found despite several evaluations for common purposes.
Uterine Fibroids:
- Uterine Fibroids are benign tumors found on the walls of the uterus. They are common in women who are in their thirties and forties. Fibroids tend to be a hindrance to the implantation of the fertilized egg.
Previous tubal sterilization or removal:
- If you have performed tubal ligation, a type of sterilization that cuts or blocks your Fallopian Tubes to prevent pregnancy permanently, then IVF can help you. If you wish to conceive, IVF is a great alternative to reverse tube ligation.
Genetic disorder:
- If there are genetic disorders that you or your significant other are afraid of passing onto your child, preimplantation genetic testing is an option. This procedure involves IVF, where after the eggs fertilize, they test for genetic disorders. However, not all genetic disorders can be detected. Embryos with no sign of genetic disorder will later transfer to the uterus.
